DOTM 15 Lie Down With the Devil (Band Demo 1991)

about

This is a track from the 4-track demo for the Weatherman album we did at the Coach House Studios in Bristol before going back a few weeks later with a deal to make the whole album. As is often the case with hot, fast, studio desk mixes, certain elements are, in my opinion, better than the album version. Slightly faster, tons of energy and brilliant snare sound and the band playing out of their collective skin

With Andy Allen engineering, Martin Vinson on bass, Kieran Argo on drums and Richie Yalland on lead guitar, I hope you like this month's free download and do please feel free to share it with like-minded music lovers... KC

lyrics

Lie Down with the Devil

When I was young I was a guitar man
Had the whole damned world in the heel of my hand
I was aiming high, but i was living low
There’s a big house with the mark of the devil’s grin
You walk up to the door he says “come right on in”
But when you want to take the high ground he won’t let you go

One day I woke up and I looked around
At a dirty little house in a bad part of town
And I said “OK Mister, you’ve hit the end of the track”
Well you’ve been in the papers and on the TV
But all you’re doing is living on a memory
You’ve been kicked out of heaven and you ‘aint never going back

Well I learned my lesson and I learned it well
I lay down with the devil
And I woke up in hell

So I kicked my Fender under the bed
The way I was living I was better off dead
And I went to see the boss man I knew I had to see
He said you must be joking i’m hearing you wrong
I got kids half your age and their twice as strong
I said “man I’m busted, have mercy on me”

Well I learned my lesson and I learned it well
I lay down with the devil
And I woke up in hell

Well it took me longer than I ever could believe
I was way down the road before I was free
And every song I sing now I paid for it over and over again
Burned in my memory is a hand-out sign
Broken down people in a hand-out line
I’ve been there, and i’m never going back again

Well I learned my lesson and I learned it well
I lay down with the devil
And I woke up in hell
